The first question of Fatwa number ( 8836 )
Q1: I have a father who is an elderly man, and he has been hospitalized for about four years and has been unable to pray, knowing that he has a pension that I receive on his behalf, and the aforementioned has adult, mature children other than me, so is it obligatory to consult them regarding your command concerning charity or expiation?
A1: First: If your father is of sound mind, it is obligatory to inform him that prayer does not become excused for him due to illness, and he must pray it according to his condition; standing, sitting, on his side, or lying down. He must also purify himself with water if he is able, or perform dry ablution. As for what comes out from urination and defecation, it is obligatory to purify oneself from it before ablution with water or by using stones; with napkins or otherwise, provided that this is done three times or more to achieve purification, or until
purification is achieved. If he is not of sound mind, then no prayer is required of him. As for fasting, it is not obligatory for him, nor is feeding required of him. When Allah heals him, he must make up the fasting he owes. If he is unable to do so after healing due to his advanced age, he must feed one poor person for every day. Second: It is not permissible to give charity from his aforementioned money unless you have permission from him. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
