The first question of Fatwa number (4849)

Q 1: What is the stronger position regarding the issue of water? Please provide clarification. What is the cure for obsessive doubts (waswasah) in ritual purity? I have a friend who is so affected by these doubts that he sometimes leaves some of his clothes in the shower where a drop of water falls during ablution. In fact, he eventually stopped praying. I advised him until he started praying again, but he asked me to guide him to a cure for this obsessive doubt.
A 1: Praise be to Allah alone, and blessings and peace be upon His Messenger, his family, and his Companions... As for what follows: First: The original state of water is purity. If its color, taste, or smell changes due to impurity, it becomes impure, whether it is a small or large amount. If impurity does not change it, it remains pure. However, if it is very small in quantity, one should avoid using it for purification, as a precaution and to avoid scholarly disagreement, in accordance with the hadith of Abu Hurayrah , traced to the Prophet:
If a dog licks the vessel of any one of you, let him throw (the contents) awayإذا ولغ الكلب في إناء أحدكم فليرقه
Sunan an-Nasa'i 66Sahih (Darussalam)
The hadith. Second: The cure for obsessive doubts is to frequently remember Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He), to ask Him for well-being from this affliction, and not to yield to the doubts. He must reject them. If he performs minor or major ritual purification and then has a doubt that he
did not wash his head, for example, he should not pay attention to it, but rather proceed on the assumption that he did wash it. Likewise, in all his other actions, he should refuse to respond to the doubts, because they are from Satan. He should frequently seek refuge in Allah from Satan, for he is the whisperer who incites evil. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
