Question 7 from Fatwa No. ( 18891 )
Q7: What is the ruling if I was the imam and in one of the rak'ahs I was distracted by worldly matters and did not recite anything What is the ruling regarding what is upon me?
A7 : If you left off reciting anything other than al-Fatihah, the prayer is valid; because reciting what comes after al-Fatihah is recommended and not obligatory. But if you left off reciting al-Fatihah, the rak'ah is invalid; because reciting al-Fatihah is one of the pillars of the prayer, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 247Sahih (Darussalam) , and the rak'ah that follows it takes its place, so you perform a rak'ah in place of the rak'ah in which you forgot al-Fatihah, and you prostrate for forgetfulness before the taslim, after completing the tashahhud, the salawat upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the supplication. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
