Reading the Qur'an: Obligatory or Recommended

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 8844 ):
Q: Is reading the Qur'an obligatory or recommended? What is the ruling on abandoning it; is it forbidden or disliked?

A: First: Allah revealed the Qur'an for belief in it, learning it, reciting it, reflecting upon it, acting in accordance with it, making it the standard for judgment and referring to it for adjudication, seeking healing from the diseases and impurities of the hearts through it, and for other purposes that Allah intended by its revelation. A person may abandon the Qur'an such that he does not believe in it, does not listen to it, and does not pay attention to it. He may believe in it but not learn it. He may learn it but not recite it. He may recite it but not reflect upon it. He may reflect upon it but not act in accordance with it, so he does not make lawful what it has made lawful, does not make forbidden what it has forbidden, does not rule by it, does not refer to it for adjudication, and does not seek healing from the diseases in his heart and body through it. Thus, a person's abandonment of the Qur'an is proportional to the extent of his turning away from it, as mentioned previously. Therefore, the servant should fear Allah regarding himself and strive to benefit from the Qur'an in all its various aspects of benefit. He misses out on good to the extent that he is characterized by abandonment. As for recitation, it is prescribed, and it is recommended to recite a lot of it and to complete a recitation of the entire Qur'an every month, but this is not obligatory. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
