The third question of Fatwa No. ( 5401 ):
Q3: How do we rule on one who dies while addicted to intoxicants, having been warned, and while he was alive he did not repent, so he met his end while addicted to intoxicants? And is it obligatory for us to bury him in the Muslim cemeteries? And what is the ruling on one who kills himself intentionally?
A3: If a Muslim dies while persisting in a major sin from the major sins, such as drinking intoxicants, usury or interest, unlawful sexual intercourse, theft, and the like, and likewise one who kills himself intentionally, then the position of the people of the Sunnah and the community is that he is a believer by his faith and an open sinner by his major sin, and his affair is left to Allah: if He wills, He forgives him, and if He wills, He punishes him according to the measure of his sins. We wash him, shroud him, pray over him, and bury him in the Muslim cemeteries, as long as he did not consider these major sins permissible; because of the saying of Allah, the Exalted:
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He willsإِنَّ اللَّهَ لاَ يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ
[An-Nisa 4:48]
, and because of the mass-transmitted reports from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the removal of the sinners from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
