The fifth question of Fatwa No. ( 4306 ):
Q5: A person falls ill and begins to speak in an unusual manner, so people say that he is possessed by a jinn. Is this true or not? They bring a reciter of the Qur’an to recite over him until he returns to his normal state. Likewise, at weddings, they bind the groom with a specific recitation so that he is unable to have intercourse with his wife upon entering her. Is this true or not?
A5: First: The jinn are a category of Allah’s creations, and they are mentioned in the Qur’an and the Sunnah. They are accountable; their believers are in Paradise and their disbelievers are in the Fire. Possession of humans by jinn is a known matter from reality. The lawful means of treatment for such possession include supplication and reciting over the person with something from the Qur’an. Second: As for reciting something on the wedding night such that the groom is
bound from his wife on the night of marriage or at the time of the contract, so that he does not have intercourse with her, this is a type of sorcery. Sorcery is forbidden and it is not permissible to engage in it. The prohibition of engaging in it is established in the Qur’an and the Sunnah, and the prescribed punishment for the sorcerer is execution. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
