Explanation of the athar of Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him): (A man praised another man in the presence of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, so he said: "You have killed the man, may Allah kill you")

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh: After the two authentic hadiths—namely, those of Imam al-Bukhari—it was narrated with a sound chain from Ibrahim ibn Yazid al-Taymi, from his father—and his father's name was Ibrahim ibn Yazid, so his father's name was Yazid—he said:
We were sitting with 'Umar and one man praised another man to his face." He said, "You have wounded the man. May Allah wound you.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 335
. This is the severity of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). "You have killed the man" means you have cut him off, as stated in the previous hadith, but he went beyond that by cursing this one who praises that man, saying to him:
May Allah kill you عَقَرَكَ اللهُ
meaning: may Allah slaughter you and destroy you. Why did 'Umar say this? Because he did not follow the etiquette of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), because he did not say when praising, "I think you are such and such," but rather he stated it with certainty. Perhaps 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had previously learned from this praising man that he knew that stating praise with certainty in the presence of the one being praised is not permissible in the Shari'ah; therefore, he cut him off and cursed him by saying:
May Allah kill you عَقَرَكَ اللهُ
