Chapter "The Chapter on the Inappropriateness of Lying": Explanation of the Hadith of 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): "Adhere to truthfulness, for truthfulness leads to righteousness..."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : I am following up on that hadith which contains that dispensation
with his statement: "The Chapter on the Inappropriateness of Lying".
Then he narrated beneath it with its authentic chain of transmission:
From 'Abdullah—and here he is 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud—from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who said:
You must be truthful. Truthfulness leads to dutifulness and dutifulness leads to the Garden. A man continues to tell the truth until he is written as a siddiq with Allah. Beware of lying. Lying leads to deviance and deviance leads to the Fire. A man continues to lie until he is written as a liar with Allah.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 386
or a liar.
In this hadith, as is clear and evident, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) exhorted all people, men and women, married and unmarried, to adhere to truthful speech.
Upon you عليكم
This is equivalent in expression to saying it is obligatory for you to hold fast to truthfulness. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) provided the reason for this with an explanatory clause, saying:
Truthfulness leads to right action
Muwatta Malik 56:16
It leads to good, it leads to righteous deeds. So whoever’s foundation and constant habit in his speech is truthfulness, this truthfulness opens for him a path to righteousness and to good.
And what comes after that? He said:
virtue leads one to Paradise
Sahih Muslim 2607a
Meaning it becomes a cause for the one who adheres to truthfulness in his speech to be admitted into Paradise. This is similar to the authentic, well-known hadith in Muslim and others:
Whoever takes a path upon which he seeks knowledge, then Allah makes a path to Paradise easy for him.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2682Da'if (Darussalam)
So seeking knowledge is a cause that leads one to Paradise. Why?
This is a clear matter, because through knowledge a person recognizes what is lawful and comes to it and enjoys it, recognizes what is obligatory and comes to it and worships Allah with it, and recognizes what is forbidden and avoids it, and thereby becomes pious before Allah, and thus the person reaches Paradise. So when a Muslim adheres to truthfulness in his speech and conversation, this truthfulness will stamp him with the mark of good and the mark of righteousness, and this will guide him to Paradise.
And conversely, if one adheres to lying, here is a phrase in which the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) says:
A man continues to tell the truth until he is written as a siddiq with Allah.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 386
And in another narration:
And a man continues to tell the truth
And this is clearer than the author’s narration here.
And a man tells the truth
may indicate that he tells the truth frequently, but the other narration:
And a man continues to tell the truth
is more emphatic in clarifying that this man’s habit and character is to always speak in his conversation with what is truth and corresponds to reality, so this man continues to tell the truth until he is recorded by Allah as a truthful one (Siddiq). This is a high station which Allah (Mighty and Majestic) rarely attributed to any of His servants except when He mentioned His Prophet and His intimate friend Ibrahim (peace be upon him), where He said of him:
Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet.
[Maryam 19:41]
