Is there a hadith to be relied upon in the interpretation of the saying of Allah the Exalted, “And indeed, she desired him, and he would have desired her, had he not seen the proof of his Lord”? And what is your opinion regarding what is attributed to Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) in the books of tafsir?

The questioner : Is there a hadith to be relied upon in the interpretation of the saying of Allah the Exalted
And she certainly determined [to seduce] him, and he would have inclined to her had he not seen the proof of his Lord ولقد همت به وهم بها لولا أن رأى برهان ربه
[Yusuf 12:24]
And what is your opinion regarding what is attributed to Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) in the books of tafsir?

The Shaykh : There is no hadith traced back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the interpretation of the aforementioned verse. As for what is narrated from Ibn 'Abbas and others, which is attributed to Yusuf (peace be upon him) and is not fitting for the general people, let alone a chosen and selected Prophet, all of that is from the Isra'iliyyat, which it is not permissible for a Muslim to narrate or attribute to Yusuf (peace be upon him). It is beneficial to mention that the scholars have two opinions in the interpretation of this verse, both of which are sound and fitting to be attributed to Yusuf (peace be upon him), but one of them is more deserving of reliance, namely the first opinion. The meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted
And she certainly determined ولقد همت به
[Yusuf 12:24]
means by the sin
and he would have desired her وهم بها
likewise
Had he not seen the proof of his Lord لولا أن رأى برهان ربه
so the meaning of this is that he did not desire her, whereas she did desire him. Here appears the infallibility of Yusuf (peace be upon him).
And she certainly determined [to seduce] him لقد همت به
[Yusuf 12:24]
means by the sin
and he would have desired her وهم بها
likewise
Had he not seen the proof of his Lord لولا أن رأى برهان ربه
therefore this desire mentioned in the verse did not materialize. This is the first opinion, and it is the relied-upon opinion because it is what is narrated from the righteous Salaf (may Allah be pleased with them). As for the other opinion, it is an opinion, as I said at the beginning of the answer, that is fitting... for Yusuf (peace be upon him) because it does not contradict infallibility but rather confirms it, but it is a later opinion not transmitted from the Salaf. It is
And she certainly determined ولقد همت به
[Yusuf 12:24]
means by the sin
and he would have desired her وهم بها
by striking her when she tried to seduce him (peace be upon him), and his response was only to desire to strike her. This interpretation does not conflict with the infallibility of Yusuf (peace be upon him), but it is an interpretation not transmitted from the righteous Salaf.
