The Shaykh : I had a discussion with some of the Azhar scholars a few years ago while I was in Mina during Hajj, on this very topic. Listen to this discussion to learn about the confusion of the scholars and to learn about the soundness of the Salafi creed.
This Azhari scholar was present while I was in a lesson with some of the pilgrims there; I do not remember exactly what I was saying. He entered the topic and began to accuse our Najdi brothers, whom they call the Wahhabis, of being anthropomorphists. This is the word they use wherever they go in the world: these Wahhabis are anthropomorphists. They did not stop there but generalized it: the Salafis are anthropomorphists. We said to him: Why, O Shaykh? He said: They say that Allah is above the heavens. I said to him: Do they say that, or does Allah say that? He paused for a moment. I said to him: Do you not know that Allah says:
The Most Merciful [who is] above the Throne established. الرَّحْمَنُ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ اسْتَوَى
[Taha 20:5]
? He said: Yes, I know this verse. I said: What does it mean? He brought up a figurative interpretation, so I refuted it. Then I entered with him into the following research: How do you say that the one who believes that Allah is above all creation is in a place? I asked him the following question, so I hope you pay attention: Is a place an existent thing or a non-existent thing?
The point of this statement is: does it have an actual existence, or is it something a person imagines? For example, like the phoenix, we use it as an example. We imagine a very strange bird that has no existence except in the mind of the one who imagines it! In other words, is a place something a person imagines, or is it an existent thing? He said: No, it is an existent thing. I said to him: I agree with you on that; because a place is part of the creation,
His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, "Be," and it is. إِنَّمَا أَمْرُهُ إِذَا أَرَادَ شَيْئًا أَنْ يَقُولَ لَهُ كُنْ فَيَكُونُ
[Ya-Sin 36:82]
, and by His saying this, the entire creation came into being. So, a place is an existent thing, and we agreed on this.
So the important point... I said to him: Is the first heaven above us? He said: Yes. I said to him: Is that a place? He said: Yes. I said to him: Are the third, fourth, and seventh heavens a place? He said: Yes. I said to him: And above the seventh heaven, is the Throne of the Most Merciful a place? He said: It is a place. I said to him: Is there a place above the Throne of the Most Merciful? Or is there something above the Throne of the Most Merciful? I heard a word I was reading in some books and spiritual texts. He said: Above the Throne are the Cherubim angels. I said to him: What are the Cherubim angels? He said to me: The angels are above the Throne. I said to him: Is there a verse? He said: No. I said to him: Is there a hadith? He said: No. I said to him: Glory be to Allah! I know that in the Noble Azhar—meaning their Azhar—they teach the students that the creed is not established by an authentic hadith; it must be a mass-transmitted hadith for them to establish the creed. So, glory be to Allah! How can I establish Cherubim angels above the Throne when there is not even a weak hadith, at best, and not even a weak hadith? However, that is not our topic right now. Suppose there are angels above the Throne whom they call Cherubim angels; is there anything above the Cherubim angels? ... I said to him: Is the creation, from which a place is taken, limited or unlimited? He said: Limited. On this basis, I proceeded with him in this question and answer. We reached the Cherubim angels, and I conceded to him in the argument their existence. Is there anything after this creation, which is the Throne and upon it are the Cherubim angels? He said: No. I said to him: Is there a place? He said: No. So why did you say the Salafis say: Allah is in a place, when they say He is above the Throne? Above the Throne, truly, I hope you understand this; there is no place above the Throne. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is not in a place; that is, when the Salafi creed affirms that correct creed, which is disseminated in many verses and hadiths, that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is above all creation; then He is not in a place, by our agreement and theirs. This is a discussion from which no one can escape. The creation is definitely limited according to all believers, and a place is part of this creation. So when the creation ends, there is no place remaining. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is above the place, not in a place. So where is the likening and where is the ascribing a body? And true is the one who said:
And all good is in following those who came before *** And all evil is in the innovation of those who came after
I do not know if I missed answering some of what came in the Qur'an.
