Alerting People to the Etiquette of Yawning, Especially in Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh: And I heard just now, before the previous question was asked, the sound of someone yawning in prayer. I heard the sound of someone yawning in prayer saying: "Hah." This is etiquette, or rather, bad etiquette. A Muslim neglects this outside of prayer, and the badness is doubled inside prayer. That is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say:
So when one of you yawns he should try to restrain it as far as it lies in his power. إذا تثاءَبَ أحدكم فليكظِمْ ما استطاع
Sahih Muslim 2994
,
So when one of you yawns he should try to restrain it as far as it lies in his power. إذا تثاءب أحدكم فليكظِمْ ما استطاع
Sahih Muslim 2994
What does "khatm" (holding back) mean?
And those who restrain anger وَالْكَاظِمِينَ الْغَيْظَ
What does it mean? It is the one who controls himself and tightens his nerves, and does not let his mouth open like this with the yawn and say: "Ah,"
Let him hold it back as much as he can فليكظِمْ ما استطاع
. If he cannot hold it back, let him put his hand over his mouth and not say: "Ah, ah"; for Satan laughs at him, and in a narration, he enters into him, meaning into his mouth. This is the general rule. So what about when the Muslim is standing before his Lord, conversing with Him? If he were to stand before a person, a servant of Allah like him, before a great man, a king, a minister, an emir, or the like, he would be ashamed to open his mouth before him, let alone raise his voice with his yawn. So why does the Muslim neglect this etiquette while he is before his Lord (Blessed and Exalted is He)?
Therefore, I wanted to remind you, and the reminder benefits the believers, especially since I say, with regret, that you rarely hear such a hadith. What you hear from most teachers, preachers, orators, and guides is only repeated matters, while there are things contrary to the Shari'ah that are repeated constantly and forever, and yet there is no one to remind about them or forbid them. Among these is this hadith you heard just now:
So when one of you yawns he should try to restrain it as far as it lies in his power. إذا تثاءَبَ أحدكم فليكظِمْ ما استطاع
Sahih Muslim 2994
. One should not open his mouth like a sock like this; no, rather, he should hold it back as much as he can. If he cannot, he puts his hand over his mouth. This is a widespread habit, and people are unaware of it. And there is another thing I mentioned just now while we were sitting in that room, and now we are in the mosque, which we hope will be filled with worshippers, if Allah wills.
