Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (If We had willed, We would have made it bitter)

Allah the Exalted said:
If We willed, We could make it bitterلَوْ نَشَاءُ جَعَلْنَاهُ أُجَاجاً
[al-Waqi'ah: 70] Meaning: We would have made it salty and unpleasant in taste, so that it could not be drunk. And here He says:
If We willed, We could make it bitterلَوْ نَشَاءُ جَعَلْنَاهُ أُجَاجاً
[al-Waqi'ah: 70] And He did not say: (If We had willed, We would have dried it up) or: (We would have prevented its descent) because their looking at the water with their own eyes, yet being unable to drink it, is a greater source of regret than if it did not exist at all. And Allah Mighty and Majestic intends to challenge them with what is the greatest thing in the regret of their souls:
If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?لَوْ نَشَاءُ جَعَلْنَاهُ أُجَاجاً فَلَوْلا تَشْكُرُونَ
[al-Waqi'ah: 70] Meaning: So why do you not thank Allah Mighty and Majestic for descending it from the clouds, and for it being a pure, sweet drink, pleasant in taste and easy to digest.
