The questioner : Is it permissible, O honorable Shaykh, to complete the prayer with Surat al-Kawthar, meaning that I read a verse from this noble surah in the first rak'ah and complete the remaining verses in the second rak'ah? Is that valid, or is it obligatory to complete the surah in every rak'ah?
The Shaykh : Allah the Exalted says in the noble Qur'an:[Al-Muzzammil 73:20] And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the man whom he taught how to pray: Bulugh al-Maram 2:139 And it is not obligatory for the one praying to read anything specific from the Qur'an except Surat al-Fatihah, for Jami` at-Tirmidhi 247Sahih (Darussalam) If you read al-Fatihah and read with it whatever is easy for you from the Qur'an, there is no sin on you and no blame on you, whether you read one verse or two verses or more, and whether you read a complete surah in every rak'ah or divide the surah between the two rak'ahs or read more than one surah in a rak'ah. All of this is permissible and there is no blame on you in it. Yes.
