The questioner : When a man wants to reconcile two quarreling parties, is he permitted to lie and swear by Allah, provided his intention is solely to bring about reconciliation? Is this permissible, O honorable Shaykh?

The Shaykh : As for lying in reconciliation between people, it is permissible because of the public benefit involved, which outweighs the harm of lying. Nevertheless, it is better for the reconciler to use euphemism in his speech, meaning he should take the path of euphemism by intending with his words something that contradicts their apparent meaning. If he wants to say to one of the two disputants, "By Allah, so-and-so did not say anything about you," while he knows that the person did say something about him, he should intend with this statement something else other than what was actually said about him. In this way, he is truthful, and in the presence of the person addressed, he only intended what he accused him of, what he accused...
