The questioner : With the praise of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), I have become convinced of the legitimacy of the hijab that covers the entire body, and I have committed to wearing it for years. I have read many books on the hijab, especially various books of tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis), which naturally address the topic of the hijab while interpreting certain surahs, such as Surat al-Nur and Surat al-Ahzab. However, I do not know how to reconcile the dress of Muslim women during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Rightly Guided Caliphs, and during the era of the Umayyads, with the importance of the hijab, which I almost consider an individual obligation for all women?
The Shaykh : We must know that the era of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is divided into two parts:
One is what was before the hijab, when women uncovered their faces and it was not obligatory for them to cover up.
The second is what was after the hijab, which is after the sixth year. In this period, the women (may Allah be pleased with them) committed to the hijab, and they became as Allah the Exalted commanded His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to say to his daughters, the wives of the believers, and his wives: "Let them draw their jilbabs (outer garments) over their bodies." So they (may Allah be pleased with them) wore black garments and did not show even one eye, looking only to see the road. And the people, praise be to Allah, in our land have remained on this path, which is the requirement of the indication of the Book and the Sunnah, and correct consideration and reflection. I ask Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) to preserve for our women this covering hijab, which is a blessing He has bestowed upon them, as it is the requirement of the indication of the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and the consistent correct reflection.
