The questioner : Is the one who hates his wife, meaning he does not love her, is he a sinner?
The Shaykh : Love and hatred are things that Allah the Exalted places in the heart of the servant, and a person may not be able to control his own self in this matter, meaning he may not be able to make the one he loves hated or the one he hates loved. However, there are causes for love and causes for hatred. Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has forbidden everything that leads to enmity and hatred, and He has commanded what necessitates affection and closeness. Therefore, a man, especially regarding his wife, must strive with utmost effort to do the things that bring affection and love between them:
Among these is that he should mention her good qualities and overlook her bad ones, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) guided to this in his saying:Sahih Muslim 1468b He should deal with his wife in this way, and she should deal with him in the same way, until love takes hold of their hearts and affection and closeness are achieved. The matter of the wife is not like other matters, for if the spouses become estranged from each other, it has its danger, especially if there are children between them.
