The questioner : In recent times, a custom has appeared among us, which we can call a religious innovation, and that is when a person dies, they raise the volume of the recitation of the Qur'an with loudspeakers in the house of mourning, and when they carry him in the hearse to the cemetery, they also raise the volume of the recitation, usually with loudspeakers, until a person, merely upon hearing the Qur'an, assumes there is a dead person, and he becomes superstitious about hearing the Qur'an, and even more so, he no longer turns on the recitation of the Qur'an except when a person dies. What is the ruling on this strange phenomenon, O honorable Shaykh? And do you have a word of good guidance to direct to the people through your program regarding this matter, so that people do not move further and further away from the Noble Qur'an?

The Shaykh : The answer is that we say this action is a religious innovation without doubt, for it was not in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) nor in the time of his Companions. The Qur'an is meant to alleviate sorrows when a person recites it to himself, between himself and himself, not when it is announced over loudspeakers that every person hears, even those who are idle in their idleness, and even those who listen to musical instruments and instruments of amusement; you find them hearing the Qur'an and hearing these instruments, as if they are mocking this Qur'an and making fun of it.
Furthermore, the gathering of the deceased's family to receive condolences is also among the matters that were not known, to the extent that some scholars said it is a religious innovation. Therefore, we do not see that the deceased's family should gather to receive condolences, but rather they should close their doors. If someone meets them in the market, or if one of their acquaintances comes without them having prepared for this meeting and without them opening the door, then there is nothing wrong with that. But their gathering and opening the doors to receive people is something that was not known in the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
The Companions even considered the gathering of the deceased's family and the preparation of food to be wailing, and wailing, as is well known, is among the major sins, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the wailer and the listener. لعن النائحة والمستمعة
and he said:
If the wailing woman does not repent before she dies, she will be made to stand on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of pitch and a chemise of mange. النائحة إذا لم تتب قبل موتها تقام يوم القيامة وعليها سربال من قطران ودرع من جرب
Sahih Muslim 934
We ask Allah for safety.
So my advice to my Muslim brothers is to leave these newly invented matters, for that is better for them with Allah, and it is better for the deceased as well, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed
The deceased is punished because of his family's weeping over the death أن الميت يعذب ببكاء أهله عليه وبنياح أهله عليه
Sahih Muslim 927a
, meaning he suffers from this crying and this wailing, even though he is not punished with the punishment of the doer, because Allah the Exalted says:
and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another ولا تزر وازرة وزر أخرى
[Al-An'am 6:164]
.
And the punishment is not a penalty, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Traveling is a kind of torture إن السفر قطعة من العذاب
Sahih al-Bukhari 5429
Rather, pain, worry, and the like are considered punishment. Among the passing words is: "My conscience has punished me," when he is struck by severe grief and worry. The conclusion is: I advise my brothers to avoid such customs, which do not increase them in anything but distance from Allah, and do not increase their dead in anything but punishment.
