The questioner : That he is a pious young man, praise be to Allah, who is twenty-two years old, and he says: I am suffering from a problem, and I hope that Allah, then you, will help me to get rid of it. It is that when I begin the prayer, I start yawning without intending to, and this state always accompanies me, even when I recite the Verse of the Throne specifically. I do not know the reason for this, as I yawn more than ten times in a single prayer. I ask your eminence to provide guidance?

The Shaykh : Yawning is from Shaytan, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us. Just as Shaytan may dominate the one praying by casting whispers in his heart and distracting thoughts that have no control and no benefit, so too he may dominate him through yawning, causing him to yawn frequently until he is distracted from his prayer. If he finds this, let him do what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded:
He should hold it in as much as he can, and if he cannot, let him put his hand over his mouth. يكظم ما استطاع فإن لم يستطع فليضع يده على فمه
so that he does not give Shaytan a way to him. Let him strive to turn to the prayer with energy, determination, and sincere resolve. Let him ask Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) for well-being from what happens to him in his prayer. And if he asks Allah the Exalted sincerely and does what he can to try to remove this phenomenon, then Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says:
And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided. وإذا سألك عبادي عني فإني قريب أجيب دعوة الداعي إذا دعاني فليستجيبوا لي وليؤمنوا به لعلهم يرشدون
[Al-Baqarah 2:186]
