He asks about the noble verses at the beginning of Surat al-Fajr
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : He asks about the noble verses at the beginning of Surat al-Fajr. I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan:
And the dawn (1) And the ten nights (2) And the even and the odd (3) And the night when it is quiet (4) Is there in that an oath for one of sound judgment (5)? The Shaykh: These things by which Allah the Exalted swore are among the signs of Allah Mighty and Majestic, indicating the perfection of His power and His greatness. So the bright, splitting dawn after the dark darkness is among the signs of Allah Mighty and Majestic, because no one can bring the sun, whose light is this forerunner, except Allah Mighty and Majestic. And in the dawn are the signs of Allah: the change of the horizon, the opening of light upon people, the opening of the door to their livelihoods, and other matters, much of which is hidden from us, but they are among the great signs of Allah. As for the nights, they are either the ten nights of Ramadan in which is the Night of Decree, and the Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. And in every night of the ten nights, and others as well, Allah Mighty and Majestic descends when the last third of the night remains to the lowest heaven in a manner whose how is known to none but He, Glorified and Exalted is He. He says: Who calls upon Me that I may respond to him? Who asks Me that I may give him? Who seeks My forgiveness that I may forgive him? Or the ten nights may be the ten of Dhu al-Hijjah, about which the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days. So righteous deeds in the ten of Dhu al-Hijjah are better than righteous deeds in the ten days of Ramadan, by virtue of this hadith. And on this occasion, I would like to remind my Muslim brothers to seize the opportunity in these ten days, for most Muslims are heedless of their virtue and the virtue of deeds in them. For this reason, they pass by as if they are ordinary days that do not possess a special virtue. It is necessary in the ten of Dhu al-Hijjah to increase in obedience and righteous deeds through prayer, charity, fasting, and other things that bring one closer to Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He. As for the even and the odd, it was said that it is an oath by the created and the Creator. So the even is the created and the odd is the Creator, Mighty and Majestic, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah is Odd and He loves the odd. And as for the even, it is the created, by His saying, the Exalted: And of everything We created pairs, that you may remember. And as for His saying: And the night when it is quiet, it is an oath by the night when it passes and its darkness spreads. It is also among the signs of Allah, and it is the counterpart to the oath by the dawn. For the night is darkness in which people rest, and they seek their energy through sleep, which Allah the Exalted made a rest that cuts off previous fatigue and renews strength for subsequent work. So Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, swore by these things. And He said after that: Is there in that an oath for one of sound judgment? This is an interrogative for affirmation, meaning that this is a great oath known by every one of sound judgment. And "hajar" here means intellect. So every person of intellect who reflects on what is in these things by which Allah swore will become clear to him the greatness of this oath. As for what is sworn upon, the grammarians differed, and this is not the place to elaborate on it. But I would like to point out an important benefit for the student of knowledge, which is that Allah Mighty and Majestic sometimes swears by things indicating His greatness and power to clarify by this oath the greatness of these things and that they are among the great signs of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, even if there is nothing sworn upon. And among that, for example, is His saying, the Exalted: I do not swear by the Day of Resurrection, Nor do I swear by the self-reproaching soul. Does the man think that We will not assemble his bones? For some grammarians say: There is in the thing sworn by evidence of the thing sworn upon, so there is no need for an oath. And whoever wants to expand on this should read al-Tibyan fi Aqsam al-Qur'an by Shams al-Din Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, one of the students of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on them. The questioner: May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh, and may Allah magnify your reward for what you have clarified for us and for the honorable listening brothers, our noble brothers. The honorable Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen, professor at the College of Sharia in al-Qassim, and preacher and imam of the Great Mosque in Unayzah, has answered your questions. May Allah reward him for his excellence, and thank you for your good follow-up. Until we meet again, and peace from Allah upon you and His mercy and blessings.
