The questioner : From the questions of the listener Siraj, this question says: Some women visit graves, justifying it by their advanced age. What do you advise them? May Allah reward you?

The Shaykh : What we advise these women who visit graves is to avoid that and to repent to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) from this action, because a woman’s visit to graves is a major sin among the major sins. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the women who visit graves and those who make them into mosques and place lamps on them. So they should repent to Allah and stay away from this visit. There is no difference between an old woman and a young woman, because the operative cause is one, and that is that she is a woman. This is not contradicted by what is reported in Sahih Muslim from the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what to say in supplication for the dead, so he informed her of the supplication that is said when visiting graves. Because this is understood to apply if a woman passes by the cemetery without intending to visit; in that case, there is no harm in her stopping and supplicating with what the Sunnah has brought of supplication for the people of the graves. But as for her going out of her house intending to visit, that is forbidden, indeed it is among the major sins. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
