A man who loves to read the Qur'an but does not read it well, and there are young men who are better than him in reading but do not apply its rulings, and they said to him

The questioner : We return to the message from the listener in al-Bahah, Sa'd Ali from al-Makha'ah Middle School. We also reviewed a question from him, and this question remains for him. He says that he loves to read the Qur'an with great love, and praise be to Allah. He says, "I do not actually read well, and there are young men who are better than me in their reading, but they do not apply its rulings. They say, 'If you were devout, you would be better than us.' What is your opinion on this?"

The Shaykh : I see that the benefit of reading the Qur'an is to reflect upon it, take admonition from it, and act upon it. So you are more deserving of the Qur'an than they are, because you act upon it, as you said. It is well known that the one who is skilled in reading the Qur'an but does not act upon it is similar to those about whom Allah said:
The example of those who were entrusted with the Torah and then did not take it on is like that of a donkey who carries volumes [of books]. مَثَلُ الَّذينَ حُمِّلُوا التَّوراةَ ثُمَّ لَم يَحمِلوها كَمَثَلِ الحِمارِ يَحمِلُ أَسفارًا
[Al-Jumu'ah 62:5]
So the carrier is bad and the carried is good. So tell them, if they say such a thing to you, say: "And if you were among the people of the Qur'an, you would have acted upon it. Your turning away from the Qur'an, even though Allah has charged you with it, is worse than your not knowing the Qur'an."
As for you, if you read the Qur'an and you stumble over it and it is difficult for you, then you have two rewards, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
and he who falters in it, and finds it difficult for him, will have two rewards. الذي يقرأ القرءان ويتتعتع فيه وهو عليه شاق له أجران
Sahih Muslim 798a
And with that, do not despair, and try again and again to master the reading. Know that it is not obligatory for you to read with tajwid. The important thing is to establish the words and letters according to the written form, so do not add a kasrah to what is marked with a dammah, and do not add a dammah to what is marked with a kasrah, but proceed according to the written form, whether by the way of tajwid or without the way of tajwid, because tajwid is not intended for anything but improving the pronunciation, and improving the pronunciation is not obligatory; rather, it is part of the perfection of the reading. So there is no harm if you read the Qur'an without tajwid, but it is necessary to observe the written form. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
