I memorized the Noble Qur'an, but I have forgotten some of it, and whenever I try to memorize it, I forget it. What should I do? I hope you will guide me to a method by which I can review the Noble Qur'an.

The questioner : The questioner says: I memorized the Noble Qur'an, and praise be to Allah, but I have forgotten some of it, and whenever I try to memorize it, I forget it. What should I do? I hope you will guide me to a method by which I can review the Noble Qur'an and not forget it, and may Allah reward you with good?

The Shaykh : It is well known that forgetting is part of human nature. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Verily I am a human being like you, I forget just as you forget. إنما أنا بشر مثلكم أنسى كما تنسون
Sahih Muslim 572j
People differ in their ability to memorize, some being quick and others slow, and they also differ in how long what they have memorized remains with them, some retaining it quickly and others slowly. And Allah grants His favor to whom He wills. But we say to this woman: If she is quick to forget, let her frequently review the Qur'an. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Keep refreshing your knowledge of the Qur'an, for I swear by Him in Whose Hand is the life of Mahammad that it is more liable to escape than camels which are hobbled. تعاهدوا القرآن فوالذي نفسي بيده لهو أشد تفلتاً من الإبل في عقلها
Sahih Muslim 791
And if she reviews it, seeking help from Allah, hoping for the reward of Allah, and hoping that Allah will preserve for her what she has memorized, then Allah the Exalted will help her, as Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said in the Holy Hadith:
I am just as My slave thinks I am, (i.e. I am able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him) and I am with him if He remembers Me. أنا عند ظن عبدي بي، وأنا معه إذا ذكرني
Sahih al-Bukhari 7405
.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
