The questioner : This is a question from the questioner, Adel al-Harbi, from Makkah al-Mukarramah. He asks: Is it permissible to leave Mina after midnight on the nights of the eleventh and twelfth?
The Shaykh : If most of the night has passed and he is in Mina, he may leave it, as the majority is treated as the whole. However, what I advise my fellow pilgrims is to make their Hajj a Hajj in accordance with the Sunnah that came from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to remain in Mina by night and day, even though at that time there were no air conditioners or tents like those of today. He was patient and seeking reward. He made Hajj a type of jihad in the path of Allah when the Mother of the Believers, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), asked him: "Is there jihad for women?" He said:Sunan Ibn Majah 2901Sahih (Darussalam) and Hajj is not a pleasure trip or entertainment; Hajj is worship. So let a person restrain himself for this worship and follow the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in it completely, remaining in Mina by night and day. It is only the day of Eid and the two days after it for those who hasten, or three days for those who delay. But it is regrettable to hear of incidents in Hajj that indicate the doers' disregard for Hajj, and that they have only the name of it without its reality. It has reached us that some people remain in their houses on the night of the tenth of the month of Dhul-Hijjah, then during the night they enter the state of ihram and go out to 'Arafah with their blankets and things to make themselves comfortable. Then, when only a little of the night remains, they go to Muzdalifah and pick up pebbles, as they say, then walk to Mina and stone the pillar before Fajr. They descend to Makkah, perform tawaf and sa'y, then return to their houses with their families that same night. Some of them go out during the day to Mina to stone the pillars, and some of them delegate it as well. Is this Hajj? This is playing with it. Even if, according to the jurists' principle, it may be sufficient, where is the worship? A man goes out to relax for part of the night, then returns to his family, and it is said that he performed Hajj.
And this, by Allah, is what hurts the soul and wounds the heart, that the matter reaches this point in establishing this great rite. We ask Allah for guidance for us and for them.
The questioner : O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you, O Shaykh.

Upon them is a Jihad in which there is no fighting: Al-Hajj and Al-‘Umrah.
