The questioner : The Qaryat region. She says: We have a driver, and I always ride with him, and he takes me to any place I ask. And when I ride with him, I always listen to the Noble Quran radio and to beneficial tapes, and sometimes I take with me a person or one of my brothers' children. What is the ruling on that?
The Shaykh : It is not permissible for a woman to ride with a driver alone if he is not one of her mahram (a relative one may not marry), because that is seclusion. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the prohibition of a man being secluded with a woman, and he informed that if a man is secluded with a woman, the third of them is Satan. I seek refuge in Allah. Riding in a car alone with the driver is seclusion without doubt. It is not justified for the woman to say that the distance is short, only from house to house. It is not justified for her to say that the driver is trustworthy, because if Satan is the third of the man and the woman, there is no trustworthiness unless Allah wills. It is not justified for her to say that she is listening to the Quran radio or to religious tapes, because her listening to the Quran radio or to religious tapes while she is disobeying Allah is a contradiction. The right of the one who listens to the Quran or to religious tapes is to obey the command of Allah and His Messenger and to avoid what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden.
