The questioner : Is there a prayer in our noble Shari'ah called the Prayer of Gratitude, and what is its method?
The Shaykh : I do not know of a prayer in the Sunnah called the Prayer of Gratitude, but there is a prostration called the Prostration of Gratitude. This is when a person is granted a new blessing, other than the continuous blessings. For the blessings of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, are continuous, as He the Exalted said:[An-Nahl 16:18] But sometimes a new blessing comes that has not occurred before, or it occurred before but is not continuous. If this happens, it is recommended (sunnah) for the person to prostrate to Allah in gratitude. He says: Allahu Akbar, and in his prostration he says: Subhan Rabbi al-A'la (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High), and he praises his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, with perfection, for what He has bestowed, and thanks Him for the blessing He has granted him. Then he stands up without saying Allahu Akbar and without the closing salam.
The stronger opinion regarding the Prostration of Gratitude is that ritual purity is not a condition for it, because blessings may come suddenly without a person preparing for them with ritual purity. If he goes to perform ritual purity, the time for it may pass. If he prostrates while not in a state of ritual purity, the correct view is that this is permissible and there is no harm in it.
The questioner : May Allah bless you.
