The questioner : One of the students who holds fast to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) says, “I am successful in my studies, and praise be to Allah, but I compose poetry frequently and recite it on occasions and in non-occasions, which has caused me to spend most of my time reading poetry books and composing poetry. What is the ruling on this work? May Allah reward you.”
The Shaykh : If you are reciting permissible poetry, or poetry that contains good for people and guides them to what benefits them in their religion and worldly affairs, then there is no blame on you for that. However, if you are reciting forbidden, low, and vulgar poetry, then this is forbidden for you. With this, we say: The better course for you, as a student of knowledge, is to leave this work and devote yourself to seeking knowledge from the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and the sayings of the Companions and the Imams after them, so that Allah may benefit you with it. For what you are currently doing is either that you are safe in it, or that you are rewarded with a reward that does not equal the seeking of Islamic jurisprudence based on the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and the sayings of the Companions and the Imams.
Or you may be sinful if the poetry you are reciting is low and vulgar poetry that calls to lewdness and obscenity.
So my advice to you is to leave what you are currently doing with poetry and reviewing poetry collections, and to devote yourself to Islamic jurisprudence, so that Allah may benefit you with it.
