The questioner : My father trusts me, and I am in his service. Sometimes money remains with me that I have earned from working in my father’s car, which is a water transport tanker. Then I sometimes buy household items for my father’s house with that money, and sometimes I buy fuel for the car or for my father’s car with it, and sometimes it remains with me and I dispose of it. Is there any sin on me for that?
The Shaykh : Yes. As for what you spend of this money on the needs of your father’s house or the needs of his car, there is nothing wrong with it, although it is better that you seek his permission. As for what you spend on your car and your personal expenses, it is forbidden for you, and it is not permissible for your father to give you permission for that if you have brothers, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 2587. Yes, if you agreed with your father that you would use his car for hire, on the condition that you receive half of the fare, for example, and this portion is the portion that would be stipulated for someone else if they used the car, then there is nothing wrong with it, because you took this and earned it by virtue of working in your father’s car. But if you are working in your father’s car as a volunteer, and it is considered part of your dutifulness to your father, then it is not permissible for you to take a wage in return for that. Yes.
