The questioner : I heard in one of the episodes of the program *Nur 'ala al-Darb* that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
He cursed the women who visit graves. لعن زائرات القبور من النساء
Is this visit forbidden if it is for making du'a for the deceased, whether relatives or others, without wailing, tearing clothes, or slapping? Knowing that I have a sister in Yemen who recently passed away, and I am now intending to make a trip to Yemen, if Allah wills, is it forbidden for me to visit my sister's grave (may Allah have mercy on her) to make du'a for her and greet her? Please inform us of this as well, may you be rewarded.

The Shaykh : What we see is that women visiting graves is one of the major sins, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Cursed are the women who visit graves لعن زائرات القبور
And cursing is expulsion and distance from the mercy of Allah, and this is a warning.
And the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) said regarding the definition of a major sin: it is that which entails a punishment in this world, or a warning in the Hereafter, or a curse, or anger, or denial of faith, or similar punishments that follow from disobedience. If that is the case, it indicates that it is one of the major sins. Therefore, it is not permissible for a woman to visit the cemetery, nor to visit the grave of any person.
However, if she goes out for a need of hers and passes by the cemetery and stops to greet the people of the graves and make du'a for them, then there is no harm in that, as indicated by the apparent meaning of the hadith of Aisha that Muslim narrated.
As for her going out of her house with the intention of visiting, meaning visiting graves, then that is one of the major sins and is forbidden for her.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
