The Meaning of the Saying of Allah the Exalted: "And those who came after them say, 'Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith...'"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The Muhajirun are superior.
those who followed them with good conduct الذين اتبعوهم بإحسان
[At-Tawbah 9:100]
They are those who followed their path. They followed their path in faith, in righteous deeds, in jihad, in all matters of religion, and also in morals. These are the ones who came after them; they are those who followed them with excellence, and they are those who acknowledge their virtue and precedence. What do they say? What do those who came after them say? What is it? What do those who came after them say? Please. Yes, that is correct.
The student:
"Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful." ربنا اغفر لنا ولإخواننا الذين سبقونا بالإيمان ولا تجعل في قلوبنا غلا للذين آمنوا ربنا إنك رؤوف رحيم
[Al-Hashr 59:10]
.

The Shaykh : Well done, this is clear from the verse, my brother.
those who came after them, saying, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith الذين جاؤوا من بعدهم يقولون ربنا اغفر لنا ولإخواننا الذين سبقونا بالإيمان
[Al-Hashr 59:10]
Did they precede us in faith temporally, or temporally and conceptually? Answer, my brothers. It is both; they preceded them in faith because they believed before them, and these are followers. They also preceded them. Yes, they preceded them in faith in time, and they also preceded them in faith in meaning, for the faith of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) is stronger than the faith of the Tabi'un without doubt. And the intended meaning is also the general category. It is possible that some Companion, or one of the Companions, is less [in faith] than some of the Tabi'un. But the preference is in the general category, not in the individual. For this reason, we ask: Which is better, men or women?
The student: Men.

The Shaykh : Men are better. But in terms of the general category. There may be among women one who is better than many men. For example, the Mothers of the Believers: Khadijah, A'ishah, Umm Salimah, and others. These women are undoubtedly much better than many men. But the intended meaning is the general category.
Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. الرجال قوامون على النساء بما فضل الله بعضهم على بعض وبما أنفقوا من أموالهم
[An-Nisa 4:34]
Returning to the verse:
those who came after them, saying, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith الذين جاؤوا من بعدهم يقولون ربنا اغفر لنا ولإخواننا الذين سبقونا بالإيمان
[Al-Hashr 59:10]
