For those who take an oath to abstain from their wives, there is a waiting period of four months لِلَّذِينَ يُؤْلُونَ مِنْ نِسَائِهِمْ

means if he places his wife with her family to discipline her, he places her with her family for four months.

The Shaykh : What?

The questioner : Does the meaning of the verse mean he disciplines her by placing her with her family for four months?

The Shaykh : No, no, no. The meaning of
For those who swear not to have sexual relations with their wives لِلَّذِينَ يُؤْلُونَ مِنْ نِسَائِهِمْ
[Al-Baqarah 2:226]
is that if a man swears an oath not to have intercourse with his wife, he is given a respite of four months, so either he has intercourse with her or he divorces her.

The questioner : But what if he wants to discipline her, O Shaykh, and place her [with her family]?

The Shaykh : He does not discipline her in this way; he does not discipline her for four months.

The questioner : I mean, it is a hardship.

The Shaykh : He has the right to discipline her for a month, just as the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did.

The questioner : But does he commit a sin if it is for three months or four months?

The Shaykh : As long as it is for the purpose of discipline, there is no harm, but four months or more is not permissible.
