What is the ruling on a woman shaking hands with non-mahram men, given that she places a barrier on her hand?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : In the name of Allah, all praise is due to Allah, and may the prayers and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.

The Shaykh : Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.

The questioner : There are some customs among some people where they shake hands with women who are not their mahram, and the woman comes and puts on her jilbab or wraps her khimar and shakes the man's hand.
And when some people rebuke him, he says: "I did not shake her hand; she put her garment or jilbab on it, and I did not touch the woman; I did not shake her hand. What is the ruling?"

The Shaykh : The ruling is that it is not permissible for a man to shake hands with a woman who is not his mahram, neither directly nor through a barrier, because shaking hands through a barrier involves a person grasping the hand and feeling it, so it is not permissible for him to shake her hand, whether with a barrier or without one.

The questioner : What is the authenticity of a report, or I do not know, that says:
Would any of you like to be struck on the head with a thorn, which would be better for him than shaking hands with a woman who is not lawful for him? أيحب أحدكم يضرب بمخيط في رأسه خير له من أن يصافح امرأة لا تحل له
?

The Shaykh : This is from the hadiths of warning; there is discussion about it; it is weak, but it is from the hadiths of warning that serve to caution people.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
