Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: [When the sun is folded up].

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Allah Mighty and Majestic said, "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful"
(1) When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness] (2) And when the stars fall, dispersing, (3) And when the mountains are removed
[At-Takwir 81:1-3]
.
His saying, the Exalted:
When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]
[At-Takwir 81:1]
This occurs on the Day of Resurrection. Al-takwir means gathering a thing together and wrapping it, just as a turban is wrapped around the head. The sun is a massive, large, and vast body. On the Day of Resurrection, Allah Mighty and Majestic will fold it up, wrapping it entirely and folding part of it over part, causing its light to vanish. He will cast it into the Fire, Mighty and Majestic, to vex those who worship it besides Allah. Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said:
Indeed, you [disbelievers] and what you worship other than Allah are the firewood of Hell
[Al-Anbya 21:98]
meaning you will be thrown into Hellfire
You will be coming to [enter] it.
[Al-Anbya 21:98]
.
Excluded from this are those who worship besides Allah from among the awliya (close friends of Allah), for they will not be cast into the Fire, as Allah the Exalted said after this verse:
(101) Indeed, those for whom the best [reward] has preceded from Us - they are from it far removed. (102) They will not hear its sound, while they are, in that which their souls desire, abiding eternally.
[Al-Anbya 21:101-102]
(1) When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness] (2) And when the stars fall, dispersing,
[At-Takwir 81:1-2]
"Ankadarat" means they will fall, as explained by the second verse:
And when the stars are scattered
So on the Day of Resurrection, the stars will scatter and move from their places.
And when the mountains are removed
[At-Takwir 81:3]
: These great, solid, high, and lofty mountains will become dust on the Day of Resurrection and be leveled, as Allah the Exalted said:
And the mountains are removed and will be [but] a mirage.
[An-Naba 78:20]
.
And when full-term she-camels are neglected
[At-Takwir 81:4]
"Al-'Ashar" is the plural of "ushra," which is a pregnant she-camel that has reached ten months of gestation. It is among the most valuable of wealth for the Arabs. You will find its owner watching it, observing it, caring for it, sheltering it, and guarding it in this world.
But in the Hereafter, it will be neglected and no one will look at it, because the person is preoccupied with a great and distressing matter that makes him forget everything, as Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said:
(34) On the Day a man will flee from his brother (35) And his mother and his father (36) And his wife and his children, (37) For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.
['Abasa 80:34-37]
.
And when the wild beasts are gathered
[At-Takwir 81:5]
"Al-wuhush" is the plural of "wahsh," and it refers to all beasts, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And there is no creature on [or within] the earth or bird that flies with its wings except [that they are] communities like you. We have not neglected in the Register a thing. Then unto their Lord they will be gathered.
[Al-An'am 6:38]
.
The beasts will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection, and people will witness them. Retaliation will be carried out for some of them against others, until it is even carried out for the hornless beast against the horned beast. When retaliation is carried out for some of these beasts against others, Allah the Exalted will command them, and they will become dust. He does this, Glorified and Exalted is He, to manifest His justice among His creation.
And when the seas are filled with flame
[At-Takwir 81:6]
"Al-bihar" is the plural of "bahr" (sea), and they are gathered together due to their greatness and abundance, for they represent approximately three-quarters of the earth or more.
These great seas, when the Day of Resurrection comes, will be set ablaze, meaning they will burn with a great fire. At that time, the earth will dry up and no water will remain in it, because its great seas will be set ablaze until they become fire.
And when the souls are paired
[At-Takwir 81:7]
"Al-anfus" is the plural of "nafs" (soul), and it refers to the whole human being. "Tuzawwaj al-anfus" means every category will be joined to its category, because "zawj" (pair) is intended to mean category, as Allah the Exalted said:
And you become [of] three kinds: وكنتم أزواجا ثلاثة
[Al-Waqi'ah 56:7]
meaning three categories. And He said:
And other [punishments] of its type [in various] kinds.
[Sad 38:58]
meaning categories.
And He said:
Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds
[As-Saffat 37:22]
meaning their categories and forms. So on the Day of Resurrection, every form will be joined to its like: the people of good to the people of good, and the people of evil to the people of evil. And this Ummah (community) will have some of it joined to some of it
And you will see every nation kneeling
by itself
Every nation will be called to its record [and told], "Today you will be recompensed for what you used to do. كل أمة تدعى إلى كتابها اليوم تجزون ما كنتم تعملون
[Al-Jathiyah 45:28]
.
So
And when the souls are paired
[At-Takwir 81:7]
means they were formed and some of them joined to some, every category to its category, every Ummah to its Ummah.
(8) And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked (9) For what sin she was killed
[At-Takwir 81:8-9]
"Al-mu'addah" is the female infant who is buried alive. This mu'addah, the female infant, is buried alive. This is because in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, due to their ignorance, their bad opinion of Allah, and their inability to bear it, some would insult others when a female was born to them:
And when one of them is informed of [the birth of] a female, his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.
[An-Nahl 16:58]
full of worry and grief
He hides himself from the people
meaning he hides from them.
because of the ill of which he has been informed. Should he keep it in humiliation or bury it in the ground?
[An-Nahl 16:59]
meaning when it was said to one of them, "We bring you good news that Allah has brought you a female, a daughter," he became grieved and worried, filled with grief and worry, and began to think whether to keep this female in humiliation and disgrace, or to bury her in the earth and be rid of her. Some of them did this, and some did that. And, may Allah protect us, some would bury the girl while she was alive, either before she could distinguish things or after she could distinguish things.
Until some of them would dig a hole for their daughter, and if some of the dirt hit his beard, he would shake it off his beard while digging for her to bury her, and there would be no mercy for her in his heart.
And this indicates to you that the pre-Islamic age of ignorance was lowly, for even beasts show tenderness to their young, and they are beasts, yet these people did not show tenderness to their children.
He said, Mighty and Majestic:
And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked
[At-Takwir 81:8]
She will be asked on the Day of Resurrection:
For what sin she was killed
[At-Takwir 81:9]
Why did you kill? Did she commit a sin? If a person says, "How will she be asked, when she is the wronged one, the one who was buried? And she may have been buried while she could not distinguish things, and the pen of accountability had not passed over her, so how will she be asked?" It is said that she is asked to rebuke the one who buried her. She is asked to rebuke the one who buried her, because she is asked in his presence, and it is said, "For what sin did you kill her, or was she killed?"
The parallel to this is if a person aggresses against another in this world, and they come to the sultan, to the prince, and he says to the wronged one, "For what sin did this man hit you?" He knows that he is an aggressor against him and has no sin, but it is for the rebuke of the oppressor.
So the mu'addah is asked, "For what sin was she killed?" to rebuke her oppressor, her killer, and her burier. We ask Allah for well-being.
And when the pages are made public
[At-Takwir 81:10]
"Al-sujuh" is the plural of "sahifah" (record), and it is what deeds are written in. Know, O human being, that every deed you do, whether speech or action, is written, recorded in the records by trustworthy, noble scribes who know what you do. Everything you do is recorded. So when the Day of Resurrection comes, Allah Glorified and Exalted is He says in His book:
And [for] every person We have imposed his fate upon his neck
[Al-Isra 17:13]
meaning his deed is around his neck
and We will produce for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will encounter spread open.
[Al-Isra 17:13]
open
[It will be said], "Read your record. Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant."
[Al-Isra 17:14]
Our speech now, while we are speaking, is written. The speech of some of you with some of you is written. Every word is written
Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record].
[Qaf 50:18]
.
And for this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Part of a person’s goodness in Islam is his leaving alone that which does not concern him.
Sunan Ibn Majah 3976Da’if (Darussalam)
, and he said:
And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, then let him say what is good or remain silent.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2500Sahih (Darussalam)
because everything will be written against him. And whoever speaks much, his mistakes increase, meaning the one who speaks a lot has many slips and errors. So guard your tongue, for the records will write down everything you say, and they will be spread out for you on the Day of Resurrection.
(10) And when the pages are made public (11) And when the sky is stripped away
[At-Takwir 81:10-11]
The sky above us now is a preserved ceiling, strong and severe. He said, the Exalted:
And the heaven We constructed with strength
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:47]
meaning with strength. And He said:
And constructed above you seven strong [heavens]
[An-Naba 78:12]
meaning strong. On the Day of Resurrection, it will be peeled off, meaning it will be removed from its place, just as skin is peeled off a camel when it is flayed from the meat. Allah Mighty and Majestic will peel it off.
Then He will fold it, Exalted and Majestic is He, with His right hand, as He said, the Exalted:
and the heavens will be folded in His right hand
[Az-Zumar 39:67]
like the folding of a [written] sheet for the records
[Al-Anbya 21:104]
, meaning just as the scribe folds the books, meaning the writer, when he finishes writing, folds the paper to preserve it from tearing and from erasure. So the sky will be peeled off on the Day of Resurrection, and the matter will remain empty space.
Except that Allah the Exalted says:
And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight [of them].
[Al-Haqqah 69:17]
It will be in place of the sky that is above us now. What will be above us is the Throne, because the sky will be folded by the right hand of Allah Mighty and Majestic. He will fold it with His right hand and shake it, and likewise the earth with the other hand. And He says:
I am King! Where are the kings of the earth ?
Sahih al-Bukhari 6519
.
And when Hellfire is set ablaze
[At-Takwir 81:12]
: Jahannam is the Fire, and it is named so because of the depth of its bottom and the darkness of its appearance. We ask Allah to save us and you from it. "Tus'arr" means it is set ablaze. And its fuel, that by which it is set ablaze, its fuel by which it is set ablaze, Allah said about it:
O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones
[At-Tahrim 66:6]
Instead of wood and paper being brought, the fuel will be people, meaning the disbelievers, and stones, great stones of fire, intensely burning, intensely hot. This is the kindling of Hellfire.
And when Paradise is brought near,
[At-Takwir 81:13]
Paradise is the abode of the righteous. In it is what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and what has not occurred to the heart of any human being. "Azifat" means it has been brought near and adorned for the believers.
And look at the difference between this and that. The abode of the disbelievers, what is done to it? Answer: It is set ablaze, it burns. The abode of the believers is adorned and brought near.
And when Paradise is brought near,
[At-Takwir 81:13]
All of this will occur on the Day of Resurrection when we read these verses:
(1) When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness] (2) And when the stars fall, dispersing, (3) And when the mountains are removed (4) And when full-term she-camels are neglected (5) And when the wild beasts are gathered (6) And when the seas are filled with flame (7) And when the souls are paired (8) And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked (9) For what sin she was killed (10) And when the pages are made public (11) And when the sky is stripped away (12) And when Hellfire is set ablaze (13) And when Paradise is brought near,
[At-Takwir 81:1-13]
.
These are twelve sentences. Up to now, the answer has not come, because they are all within the condition:
When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]
[At-Takwir 81:1]
, so the answer has not come yet. What will happen if these things occur?
Allah the Exalted said:
A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].
[At-Takwir 81:14]
A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].
[At-Takwir 81:14]
: meaning what you have brought forward of good and evil.
The Day every soul will find what it has done of good present [before it] and what it has done of evil
[Ali 'Imran 3:30]
meaning: it will be presented as well.
it will wish that between itself and that [evil] was a great distance. And Allah warns you of Himself
[Ali 'Imran 3:30]
: So every soul will know on that day what it has brought forward of good or evil.
In this world, we know what we do of good and evil, but we quickly forget. Who remembers now what he has done from what has passed since the pen of accountability passed over him? We have forgotten a great deal, not of the acts of obedience, nor of the sins, but do you think that this has gone to waste as we have forgotten it? No, by Allah, it remains.
So when the Day of Resurrection comes, it will be presented, you will present it by your admission against yourself that you did it. And for this reason, He said, the Exalted:
A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].
[At-Takwir 81:14]
.
So it is obligatory, indeed it is obligatory, for the person to reflect on these great verses, to take a lesson from the admonitions in them, and to believe in them as if he sees them with his own eyes.
Because what Allah has informed us of and we know its meaning is more certain for us than what we have witnessed with our eyes or heard with our ears, because the news of Allah does not fail in truth, but what we see or hear often involves illusion.
You may see a distant object as a phantom, imagining it to be something specific when it is actually different from reality. You may hear a sound and assume it is a specific thing in your mind when it is actually different from reality. Illusion affects the senses, but the news of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), once its meaning is known, can never be subject to any illusion, because it is truthful news.
These matters that Allah mentioned in these verses are real things that it is obligatory to believe in as if you see them with your own eyes. After believing in them, it is obligatory to act according to what they indicate, by taking heed, restraining oneself, performing what is obligatory, and leaving what is forbidden, so that you may be among the people of the Qur'an who recite it with true recitation. May Allah make me and you among them by His grace and bounty. He is Able to do all things. Let us limit ourselves to this portion of this noble surah so that we have time to receive answers. We ask Allah to grant us success in the truth. The questions will be one by one, starting with the right side.
