Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Ahmad ibn Yunus narrated to us, saying: Zayd narrated to us from Musa ibn Abi Aishah from Ubayd Allah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah, who said: I entered upon Aishah and said, "Will you not tell me about the illness of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" She said, "Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became heavy, and he said:
Have the people prayed? أصلى الناس
We said, "No, they are waiting for you." He said:
Put some water in a tub for me. ضعوا لي ماءً في المخضب
Sunan an-Nasa'i 834Sahih (Darussalam)
She said, "So we did, and he performed ghusl. Then he tried to stand up, but he fainted. Then he came to himself and said (peace and blessings be upon him):
Have the people prayed? أصلى الناس
We said, "No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Put water for me in the washbasin." She said, "So he sat down and performed ghusl. Then he tried to stand up, but he fainted. Then he came to himself and said:
Have the people prayed? أصلى الناس
We said, "No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Put water for me in the washbasin." So he sat down and performed ghusl. Then he tried to stand up, but he fainted. Then he came to himself and said:
Have the people prayed? أصلى الناس
We said, "No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah." The people were staying in the mosque, waiting for the Prophet (peace be upon him) for the 'Isha' prayer. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent to Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. The messenger came to him and said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commands you to lead the people in prayer." Abu Bakr, who was a gentle man, said, "O Umar, lead the people in prayer." Umar said to him, "You are more deserving of that." So Abu Bakr led them in prayer for those days. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) felt some lightness in himself, so he went out between two men, one of whom was al-Abbas, for the Zuhr prayer, while Abu Bakr was leading the people in prayer. When Abu Bakr saw him, he tried to step back, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to him not to step back. He said:
Seat me beside him أجلساني إلى جنبه
So they seated him beside Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr continued to pray, following the prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the people followed the prayer of Abu Bakr, while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting. Ubayd Allah said: I entered upon Abdullah ibn Abbas and said to him, "Will you not let me recite to you what Aishah told me about the illness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said, "Bring it." So I recited her narration to him, and he did not deny anything of it, except that he said, "Did she name for you the man who was with al-Abbas?" I said, "No." He said, "It was Ali.
Abdullah ibn Yusuf narrated to us, saying: Malik informed us from Hisham ibn Urwah from his father from Aishah, the Mother of the Believers, that she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed in his house while he was ill. He prayed sitting, and some people prayed standing behind him. He gestured to them to sit. When he finished, he said:
The IMAM is appointed only to be followed; so when he prays standing. Pray standing ; and when he raises himself, raise yourself: and when he prays sitting. Pray sitting. إنما جعل الإمام ليؤتم به فإذا ركع فاركعوا وإذا رفع فارفعوا وإذا صلى جالسًا فصلوا جلوسًا
Sunan Abi Dawud 605Sahih (Al-Albani)

Abdullah ibn Yusuf narrated to us, saying: Malik informed us from Ibn Shihab from Anas ibn Malik that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) rode a horse, and it threw him off, injuring his right side. He prayed one of the prayers while sitting, and we prayed sitting behind him. When he finished, he said:
The imam is appointed only to be followed; so when he prays standing pray standing, when he bows bow, when he raises himself raise yourselves, when he says ‘God listens to him who praises Him say, ‘Our Lord, to Thee be the praise’, and when he prays sitting all of you pray sitting.
Mishkat al-Masabih 1139
Abu Abdullah said: Al-Humaydi said: His statement, "If he prays sitting, then you should sit," refers to his old illness. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed sitting afterwards, and the people behind him were standing. He did not order them to sit. Rather, the last of the actions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is what is taken.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As you know, the title of this chapter is: "The imam is appointed to be followed." We have explained previously that the appointment here is a legal appointment. His statement "to be followed" means to be imitated and taken as an imam. Then he mentioned the narrations that were discussed previously, and then he mentioned the hadith from the Musnad from Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Ubayd Allah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah entered upon her and said, "Will you not tell me about the illness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" She said, "Yes."
