The Reciter: Chapter: The Times for Witr. Abu Hurayrah said:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised me to perform witr before sleeping أوصاني النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بالوتر قبل النوم
.

The Shaykh : He also advised Abu Dharr of it, and he advised Abu al-Darda of it, three of his Companions. The scholars said that he advised them of this because they used to stay up late; they would stay up in the first part of the night and then not get up in the last part. As for one who does not stay up in the first part of the night, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever fears that he will not get up in the last part of the night, let him perform witr in the first part. And whoever hopes to get up in the last part, let him perform witr in the last part of the night, for the prayer of the last part of the night is witnessed, and that is better. من خاف ألا يقوم من آخر الليل فليوتر أوله، ومن طمع أن يقوم من آخره فليوتر آخر الليل، فإن صلاة آخر الليل مشهودة وذلك أفضل
