Fatawa of the Makkah Haram-1421-01b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: From Umm Salimah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said:
a woman came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, 'Messenger of Allah! My daughter's husband died, and her eyes are troubling her, can she put kohl on them?' جاءت امرأة إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقالت : يا رسول الله ، إن ابنتي توفي عنها زوجها ، وقد اشتكت عينها أفنكحلها ؟
Muwatta Malik 29:114

The Shaykh : Should we?
The reader:
can she put kohl on them?' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'No' two or three times. Then he said, 'It is only four months and ten days. In the Jahiliyya, none of you threw away the piece of dung until a year had passed.'
Muwatta Malik 29:114
.
She said: Zaynab, when a woman’s husband died, she would enter a hut and wear the worst of her clothes, and she would not touch perfume or anything else until a year had passed. Then she would be brought a donkey, a bird, or a sheep, and she would be rubbed with it, and it was rare that she was rubbed with something without it dying. Then she would go out and be given a dung pellet, which she would throw, and then she would return to whatever she pleased of perfume or other things.
Al-Hafish: the small, humble house.

The Shaykh : This, then, is related to the mourning period. A woman came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and said that her daughter was suffering from an eye ailment, meaning that her eye was paining her, and asked if they should apply kohl to it. He said, “No.” He prohibited applying kohl to it, even for medical treatment, because this kohl gives the eye beauty and other things can suffice in its place. So there is no dire necessity for it.
Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was content with what the women of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance used to do, where if a woman’s husband died, she would remain in a hut, a hut of her tent, meaning a dwelling, or anything, until a year had passed. Then she would stand up and go out and be given a dung pellet, which she would throw, as if she were saying that this mourning period does not concern her, just as throwing this dung pellet does not concern her. This is from the ignorance of the women, and it is evidence that the religion of Islam, and praise be to Allah, has refined morals and corrected them until they were straightened out as they should be. So praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
