Is it permissible for a scholar to attend a condolence gathering to remind the deceased's family of the Hereafter, encourage them to be patient, and preach to them?

The questioner : He asks: Is it permissible for a scholar to attend a condolence gathering to encourage the deceased's family to be patient, remind them of the transience of this world, explain to them the benefits of patience, and console them, such that the condolence gathering becomes a garden from the gardens of Paradise? Please also inform us about this part of my question.

The Shaykh : This is not from the Sunnah for a preacher to attend a condolence gathering to preach to the deceased's family and be heard by those present. In fact, gathering for condolences is disliked, as many scholars have explicitly stated. Some of them even classified it as a religious innovation. Therefore, we urge our Muslim brothers not to do this, meaning they should not sit for condolences receiving people.
First, because this was not the way of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or the way of his Companions.
Second, the state of this person who has opened his door to people, or whose unspoken state says, "O people, come to me, for I am afflicted, so console me," is something that does not befit a person of sound mind. Rather, the afflicted person should be patient and endure without saying to people, either by his state or by his words, "Come, console me."
Third, some people have exaggerated in these gatherings to the point that they make them seem like a wedding celebration. In some areas, the house is lit with electric chandeliers, the door is open, and it is spread with sand or carpets and chairs, with people coming in and going out as if they are at a wedding feast. This is undoubtedly not from the Sunnah; rather, it is contrary to the Sunnah without a doubt. It makes people feel these matters in an apparent, worldly way, wanting to console themselves with these appearances only, not with the hope of reward and the endurance of patience. Because this is merely apparent, physical joy. However, if the house remains as it is, and its people remain as they are, and they are patient among themselves and encourage one another to be patient, then this is the Sunnah.
Therefore, when the news of the death of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Prepare food for the family of Ja’far, for there has come to them that which is keeping them busy
Sunan Ibn Majah 1610Hasan (Darussalam)
and he did not say, "Go to them, gather with them, and eat with them." Rather, he said:
Prepare food for the family of Ja’far, for there has come to them that which is keeping them busy
Sunan Ibn Majah 1610Hasan (Darussalam)
meaning regarding the preparation of food. Because souls, no matter how high they may be, must become distressed, especially if the loss is great. But the fact that people gather and feasts are prepared and sent to them, or perhaps they prepare them themselves, the Companions considered the preparation of food and the gathering of people to it to be wailing.
Therefore, we say to our brothers: lighten the burden on yourselves, restrain yourselves, and do not burden yourselves with such actions that only increase you in plunging into religious innovations that were not known in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or the time of his Companions.
We say this, and we say to whoever hears it: if you have something from the Sunnah of the Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) that supports this, send it to us, and you will be thanked for it. And with the help of Allah, we will follow it. But if you do not have anything, why do you innovate a matter that the Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) and his Companions did not do? Have you not heard the saying of the Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him):
You must therefore follow my sunna and that of the rightly guided Caliphs. Hold to it and stick fast to it. 1 Avoid novelties
Mishkat al-Masabih 165Sahīh (Zubair `Aliza'i)

So we say: do not invite a scholar to attend the gathering of the deceased's family in order to deliver sermons to them. Rather, if we see that some people have reached a great degree of grief, we send one person from the family or one of the known students of knowledge to him. He speaks to him in the gathering in ordinary terms and says, "Fear Allah, be patient, and count it as a reward. For Allah is what He took and what He left, and everything is with Him by a specified term. This is a matter written before the creation of the heavens and the earth by fifty thousand years, and what is written must happen." The Prophet (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) said:
and knew that what has come to you could not miss you and that what has missed you could not come to you
Mishkat al-Masabih 115Isnād Hasan (Zubair `Aliza'i)
Your intensity in grief and weeping does not change the matter at all; rather, it increases the severity of the matter. Do you not know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The deceased is punished because of his family's weeping over the death
Sahih Muslim 927a
So an ordinary person, in an ordinary capacity, speaks to this person who has reached a great degree of affliction and lightens it for him. As for gathering and bringing preachers to preach, and the like of that, all of this is from religious innovations. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you, O honorable Shaykh.
