Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And of the people are those who say, ‘We believe in Allah and the Last Day,’ but they are not believers.”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Then Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:
And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day," but they are not believers. ومن الناس من يقول آمنا بالله وباليوم الآخر وما هم بمؤمنين
[Al-Baqarah 2:8]
And of the peopleومن الناس
The word "min" here indicates partitive specification. The sign that "min" is partitive is that "ba'd" (some) can replace it in its place. So, if this were not in the Qur'an and someone said, "And some of the people say," the statement would be correct. Thus, "min" is partitive.
of the people are some who sayمن الناس من يقول
[Al-Baqarah 2:8]
This "min" is a delayed subject.
of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day,"من يقول آمنا بالله وباليوم الآخر
[Al-Baqarah 2:8]
But they say it with their tongues, not in their hearts. For this reason, He said:
but they are not believers. وما هم بمؤمنين
[Al-Baqarah 2:8]
"Not believers." In what? We have not heard. Well, they are not believers in their hearts, but with their tongues they say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day." So Allah the Exalted said:
And when you see them, their forms please you, and if they speak, you listen to their speech وإذا رأيتهم تعجبك أجسامهم وإن يقولوا تسمع لقولهم
[Al-Munafiqun 63:4]
They test the people by their appearance and by hearing their words, but there is no good in them. Whoever wants to know the characteristics of the hypocrites should refer to the book *Madaraj al-Salikin*. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) gathered their characteristics in a single chapter. So whoever wants to review them should do so.
