Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (And if your Lord had willed, all who are on earth would have believed, all of them together).

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We listened this morning to our imam reciting the saying of Allah (Mighty and Majestic):
And if your Lord had willed, He could have made mankind one community ولو شاء ربك لجعل الناس أمة واحدة
[Hud 11:118]
.
And had your Lord willed, those on earth would have believed - all of them entirely. Then, [O Muhammad], would you compel the people in order that they become believers? ولو شاء ربك لآمن من في الأرض كلهم جميعًا أفأنت تكره الناس حتى يكونوا مؤمنين
[Yunus 10:99]
. This noble verse was revealed to console the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) so that he would not destroy himself due to the people's lack of faith. As He (Mighty and Majestic) said:
Perhaps, [O Muhammad], you would kill yourself with grief that they will not be believers. لعلك باخع نفسك أن لا يكونوا مؤمنين
[Ash-Shu'ara 26:3]
. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) would grieve and his chest would constrict if the people did not believe, out of compassion for the people, not because his message (peace and blessings be upon him) had not been fulfilled. Nevertheless, we may say that he would also grieve because his message had not been fulfilled, for he was sent to the people and it is obligatory for them to believe in him. And this verse is like His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He):
But if Allah had willed, they would not have associated. And We have not appointed you over them as a guardian, nor are you a manager over them. ولو شاء الله ما أشركوا وما جعلناك عليهم حفيظا وما أنت عليهم بوكيل
[Al-An'am 6:107]
.
