The benefits of the verse: “And of the people are some who say, ‘We believe in Allah and the Last Day,’ but they are not believers,” and the wisdom behind the frequent pairing of faith in Allah and faith in the Last Day in the Qur'an

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
He says:
And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day," ومن الناس من يقول آمنا بالله وباليوم الآخر
[Al-Baqarah 2:8]
Faith in Allah is mentioned because He is the Originator, (Glorified and Exalted is He), meaning the One from whom all matters originate, and the Last Day is mentioned because it is the ultimate end. When a person believes in Allah and the Last Day, he becomes upright. For this reason, Allah the Exalted always pairs faith in Him with faith in the Last Day, rather than with faith in the angels, the Books, or the Messengers. The reality of the matter is that whoever does not believe in the Last Day will not believe in Allah, because what will happen to him? What does he expect if he does not believe in the Last Day? He will not believe in Allah.
He said:
but they are not believers. وما هم بمؤمنين
[Al-Baqarah 2:8]
This is a refutation of their claim:
We believe in Allah and the Last Day آمنا بالله وباليوم الآخر
[Al-Baqarah 2:8]
Just as Allah the Exalted refuted them by saying:
(1) When the hypocrites come to you, [O Muhammad], they say, "We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah." And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars. (2) They have taken their oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allah. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.
[Al-Munafiqun 63:1-2]
