And believe in what I have sent down confirming that which is [already] with youوآمنوا بما أنزلت مصدقا لما معكم
[Al-Baqarah 2:41]
His saying:
they have faithآمنوا
is conjoined to His saying:
Rememberاذكروا

in what I have sent down confirming that which is [already] with youبما أنزلت مصدقا لما معكم
[Al-Baqarah 2:41]
which is the Qur'an that Allah revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). And His saying:
confirming that which is [already] with you مصدقا لما معكم
[Al-Baqarah 2:41]
What is it that is with them? It is the Torah for the Jews and the Gospel for the Christians. For Allah the Exalted has made clear in the Torah and the Gospel the description of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in a complete manner, until they came to know him as they know their own sons. And His saying:
confirming that which is [already] with youمصدقا لما معكم
[Al-Baqarah 2:41]
means [as confirmation] of what was mentioned of his (peace and blessings be upon him) attributes and the attributes of the Qur'an that he will bring. And likewise,
and as confirmation of what is with themومصدقا لما معهم
is a witness to their truth. So the confirmation of the Qur'an of them is from two aspects: the first aspect is that it occurred in agreement with what they reported, and the second aspect is that it has testified to their truth. So the Qur'an indicates clearly that Allah revealed the Torah and revealed the Gospel, and this is a testimony that they are the truth. And likewise, the Torah and the Gospel mentioned the Qur'an and mentioned Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). So when the matter occurred as they reported, that became a confirmation of them. Now, for this reason, if I told you a story and you said, "You are truthful," and then what I told you occurred as a witnessed matter that you see with your own eyes, the occurrence becomes a confirmation as well.
and be not the first to disbelieve in itولا تكونوا أول كافر به
[Al-Baqarah 2:41]
means it is not befitting for you, while you know that it is the truth, to be the first to disbelieve in it. And it does not mean "be the second to disbelieve." No, the meaning is that it is not befitting for you to be the first to disbelieve while you know that it is the truth.
And in His saying:
beتكونوا
the pronoun is a plural pronoun, and
the first disbelieverأول كافر
disbeliever is singular. So how is it correct to inform about the group with the singular? The exegetes said: The intended meaning of the speech is: "the first group to disbelieve in it," because the address is to the Children of Israel in general, and they are a group. It means: do not be the first group to disbelieve in it, because it is not befitting for you, while you know that it is the truth, to be the first of the deniers. So it was obligatory for you to be the first to believe in it.
And do not exchange My signs for a small priceولا تشتروا بآياتي ثمنا قليلا
[Al-Baqarah 2:41]
exchangeتشتروا
is not "tashraw" (you sell), because "tashraw" means "you sell," while "tashtraw" means "you take by buying." And His saying:
for a small priceبآياتي ثمنا قليلا
[Al-Baqarah 2:41]
means by that fame and leadership and the like, because the Children of Israel disbelieved seeking the worldly life. If they had followed Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), they would have been at the top and would have been given their reward twice. But out of envy and seeking the continuation of fame and honor, and because they were the People of the Book, they envied the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and did not believe in him. And His saying:
a small priceثمنا قليلا
indicates that whatever is of the worldly life is small, no matter how much a person magnifies it, it is nothing in relation to the Hereafter.
and of Me be mindful وإياي فاتقون
We say regarding the grammar of "fattaqun" (fear Me) as we said regarding:
of Me be in aweإياي فارهبون
As for taqwa (mindfulness of Allah), it is: taking protection from the punishment of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) by doing His commands and avoiding His prohibitions. So in the first verse,
of Me be in aweإياي فارهبون
there is a command to adhere to the Shari'ah and not to oppose it in disobedience. And in His saying:
be mindfulاتقون
there is a command to adhere to the Shari'ah and not to oppose it, neither in the command nor in the prohibition.
