Allah the Exalted said: [Ali 'Imran 3:3] The revelation descends from above to below, and it comes gradually, bit by bit, as Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Isra 17:106] And He the Exalted said: [Al-Furqan 25:32] meaning We did not reveal it all at once. So His saying: indicates that this Qur'an is from Allah, and that it was revealed how? Gradually, not all at once. And His saying: the pronoun refers to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and Allah the Exalted has clarified in another verse that it was revealed to the heart of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to be stronger proof of his awareness of this Qur'an that was revealed to him. And His saying: [Ali 'Imran 3:3] the Book, which is this Qur'an, is a form of active participle used as a passive, because it is written; so it is a Book because it is written in the Preserved Tablet, as He the Exalted said: [Al-Waqi'ah 56:77-78] the Preserved Tablet, and it is a Book in the pages in the hands of the angels ['Abasa 80:12-13] and it is a Book in the pages in our hands, so it is written by our hands and we read it from these books. And His saying: this "with" (ba) can be interpreted as being in the category of being accompanied by the truth, i.e., containing the truth, so it descends with truth, not with falsehood. It is also possible that it refers to the revelation, meaning it was revealed as truth, not as falsehood. He the Exalted said: [Ash-Shu'ara 26:210-211] after His saying: [Ash-Shu'ara 26:192-193] so "with the truth" means it was revealed to you as a true revelation, not a false one; so what he (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote with this Qur'an... It is also possible that it was revealed with what? With the truth, meaning containing it and accompanied by it. Both meanings are correct and do not contradict each other, and the rule is: if a text indicates two correct meanings that do not contradict each other, it is to be understood as including both. His saying: [Al-Baqarah 2:97] is a circumstantial phrase (hal) describing the Book, and it is not correct to make it an attribute, why? Because is indefinite, and is definite, and an attribute must follow the described noun in being definite or indefinite. And His saying: [Al-Baqarah 2:97] for what is before it, meaning: from the previous books. Its confirmation of what is before it has two aspects: The first aspect is that it confirmed them because they reported about it, so it came as a confirmation of it. And the second is [Al-Baqarah 2:97] meaning ruling over them as true. So it confirms the previous books for the two mentioned reasons, because the books reported about it, so it came, and when it came, it became a confirmation of them. Second, the second aspect: that He ruled that they are the truth from Allah Mighty and Majestic, so this is a confirmation of what is before it, including both aspects. So the Qur'an is a witness that the Torah is truth, and the Gospel is truth, and the Psalms are truth, and the Scrolls of Abraham are truth, and that Allah revealed a Book to every Messenger. Likewise, it confirms the books that reported about it, for the previous books reported about this Qur'an that it would be revealed, and they described the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to whom it would be revealed with the attributes by which they knew him, just as they know their children. And His saying: [Al-Baqarah 2:66] meaning what preceded it, because what is before you is prior to you, is that not so? Yes, because it is in front of you, so it precedes you. Shaf said: [Ali 'Imran 3:3] The expression differs, and the difference in expression indicates a difference in meaning. So what is the difference in meaning? The scholars said: The Torah and the Gospel were revealed all at once without gradualism, unlike the Qur'an, which was revealed gradually. And this is from the mercy of Allah Mighty and Majestic upon this Ummah, because if it was revealed gradually, its rulings also came gradually. But if it had been revealed all at once, the Ummah would have been obligated to act upon all of it without gradualism. And this is one of the burdens that were written upon those who came before us: when their books were revealed to them all at once, they were obligated to act upon them from the moment they were revealed, in what they were accustomed to and in what they were not accustomed to, unlike the Noble Qur'an. And His saying: The Torah is the Book that Allah revealed to Musa, and the Gospel is what Allah revealed to 'Isa (peace be upon him). It is said that these two names are not Arabic, and it is said: rather, they are Arabic. But what appears is that they are not Arabic, but when the Qur'an came down with something, the word that the Qur'an came down with became Arabic by what? By definition, it became Arabic by definition.
