And We gave Moses the Scripture
وآتينا موسى الكتاب [Al-Isra 17:2]
We gave it to him, and the *al* in
the Book
الكتاب
is for the covenant, meaning the covenants? The mental one, meaning the book known to you, which is the Torah. It is called a book because it is written. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) wrote the Torah with His own hand.
and the Criterion
والفرقان
The *waw* is a conjunction, and *al-Furqan* is conjoined to *al-Kitab*. Is it something other than it, or is it the same, but this is a case of conjoining an attribute to the described? The answer is the second: *al-Furqan* is the same book, for the Torah is a Criterion by which Allah distinguished between truth and falsehood, between justice and injustice, between the close friends of Allah and the enemies of Allah, and so on, all that by which distinction and difference are made. Thus, its conjunction is a case of conjoining what? An attribute to the described. Have you seen the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(1) Exalt the name of your Lord, the Most High, (2) Who created and proportioned (3) And who destined and [then] guided
سبح اسم ربك الأعلى الذي خلق فسوى والذي قدر فهدى [Al-A'la 87:1-3]
And He who measured and guided, it is Allah (Mighty and Majestic). But this is a case of conjoining an attribute to an attribute.
He (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
Perhaps you will be guided.
لعلكم تهتدون
*La'all* is for the purpose of explanation, as mentioned previously.
and you will be guided
وتهتدون
Meaning, you follow the path of guidance. The guidance intended here, as mentioned by Allah (Mighty and Majestic), is guidance of direction and guidance of success. This is because what was given to Moses was knowledge, so whoever is guided by it has acquired knowledge. Likewise, knowledge yields action for one who is granted success. So how do we explain guidance here? By guidance of knowledge and guidance of success, both theoretical and practical.
