Regarding the Witr prayer, many people recite a specific surah after al-Fatihah; is there any harm in this?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : This is Abd al-Salam Mahmoud, an Egyptian, who says in this question: “O honorable Shaykh, regarding the Witr prayer after Isha, after al-Fatihah, after al-Fatihah is recited, we observe that they do not recite anything but a specific surah in this prayer. Is there any harm in this?”

The Shaykh : If the Witr is three rak'ahs, the Sunnah is to recite
Exalt the name of your Lord, the Most High, سبّح اسم ربك الأعلى
[Al-A'la 87:1]
in the first rak'ah,
Say: O you disbelievers! قل يا أيها الكافرون
in the second rak'ah, and
Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One, قل هو الله أحد
[Al-Ikhlas 112:1]
in the third rak'ah. This is the Sunnah for one who prays Witr with three rak'ahs. If he recites something else, there is no harm, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the man:
recite whatever you conveniently can from the Qur'an اقرأ ما تيسر معك من القرءان
Sahih Muslim 397a
However, manifesting the Sunnah and explaining it to people, both in word and deed, is more preferable.
