The ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah: Are they all fasted except for the tenth, which is the day of the festival?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : We conclude this session, O honorable Shaykh, with this final segment of this noble and blessed session. The listener from the State of Kuwait, E.B.J., asks: "The ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah: Are they all fasted except for the tenth, which is the day of the festival?"

The Shaykh : Yes. The ten days are fasted from the first of Dhu al-Hijjah to the ninth, and the ninth is their conclusion, which is the Day of 'Arafah. If a person fasts it, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I anticipate that Allah will forgive (the sins) of the year after it, and the year before it. أحتسب على الله أن يُكفّر السنة التي قبله والسنة التي بعده
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 749Da'if (Darussalam)
This applies to those who are not performing Hajj. As for the pilgrim, it is not recommended for him to fast on the Day of 'Arafah while at 'Arafah. They are called the ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah, although they are nine, by way of predominance.

The questioner : By way of predominance.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh, and may Allah bless you and your knowledge, and benefit the Muslims through you.
O beloved brothers, O noble listening brothers, the honorable Shaykh has answered your questions.
