The Book of Mosques and Places of Prayer-07a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Dawud ibn Rashi'd narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us from al-Awza'i from Abu 'Ammar, whose name is Shaddad ibn 'Abd Allah, from Abu Asma' from Thawban, who said:
when God’s Messenger finished his prayer he asked forgiveness three times and said, “O God, Thou art Peace, and peace comes from Thee. Blessed art Thou, O Possessor of glory and honour.” كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا انصرف من صلاته استغفر ثلاثا وقال : اللهم أنت السلام ومنك السلام تباركت ذا الجلال والإكرام
Mishkat al-Masabih 961
. Al-Walid said: "I asked al-Awza'i, 'How is the seeking of forgiveness?' He said: 'You say: I seek the forgiveness of Allah, I seek the forgiveness of Allah.'"

The Shaykh : In this is evidence for the recommendation of this dhikr, and that it is done after finishing the prayer: "I seek the forgiveness of Allah, I seek the forgiveness of Allah, I seek the forgiveness of Allah." The reason he sought forgiveness after performing the obligatory duty is that a person is never free from falling short. Therefore, it was appropriate to seek the forgiveness of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). His saying, "O Allah, You are Peace," is also appropriate: because peace is from safety, so He (Exalted and Majestic is He) is safe from every defect and flaw. Thus, it is as if the person sought nearness to Allah through this name, asking Allah to make his prayer safe, such that it is accepted by Allah (Mighty and Majestic). For this reason, he said: "and from You comes peace."
His saying, "Blessed are You, Owner of Majesty and Honor": some of them explained it to mean: "You are Exalted and Magnificent," because *tubarakta* means being Exalted and Magnificent. Others explained it to mean: "Blessed are You, meaning Your blessings and good things are abundant." This interpretation is more suitable for the wording than the one before it, meaning the intended sense is: Your blessings and good things are abundant.
His saying, "O Owner of Majesty and Honor": meaning O Possessor of Majesty. Majesty is an attribute of Him (Glorified and Exalted is He). As for Honor, it is possible that it is from His action, or the action of His creation, meaning: O You who honor those who deserve Your honor. Or it is possible that the meaning is: O You who are honored. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is both the One who honors and the One who is honored. So He is the Owner of Majesty, and people magnify Him and honor Him. He is also, with His Majesty (Mighty and Majestic), the One who honors those who deserve honor. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:
And We have certainly honored the children of Adam ولقد كرمنا بني آدم
[Al-Isra 17:70]
