Is it obligatory to say the name of Allah before eating, or is it not?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The scholars differed on whether it is obligatory or not, and the correct view is that it is obligatory, and that if a person intentionally leaves off saying the name of Allah before eating, he is sinful, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to 'Umar ibn Abi al-Salamah:
Mention Allah's Name يا غلام سم الله
Riyad as-Salihin 739
And he said to the people who said: "O Messenger of Allah, our people bring us meat, and we do not know whether they mentioned the name of Allah over it or not," he said:
Mention the name of Allah and eat سموا أنتم وكلوا
And he informed that whoever does not mention the name of Allah, Satan will share in his food and drink, and all of this indicates that saying the name of Allah before eating is obligatory. But if they are a group, is the mention of one of them sufficient, or must each one mention it? The answer to that is: We say that if they heard his mention and listened to it, then that is sufficient, even if he did not intend it for all of them. As for if they did not hear it or did not listen to it, meaning they did not believe it was for all of them, or if someone came after the first one had already mentioned it, then he must mention it, he must mention it. The evidence for this is that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was one day at a meal, and a girl came running as if she were being pushed, until she put her hand in the vessel, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) held her hand and ordered her to mention Allah, and he informed that the hand of Satan was with her hand, in the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he had pushed her in order to eat from this food without mentioning the name, so that he would share in it, so that he would share in it. So the correct view in this issue is that saying the name of Allah before eating is obligatory, but if he forgot to mention it at the beginning, then if he remembers in the middle, he says: "In the name of Allah, at the beginning and at the end." And if he does not remember, then Allah the Exalted says:
Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. ربنا لا تؤاخذنا إن نسينا أو أخطأنا
