He asks: Is it permissible to burn torn pages from the Qur'an, or pages containing the name of Allah the Exalted? I believe they contain the name of Allah the Exalted, because I heard that whoever burns a page will be branded with it on the Day of Resurrection.

The questioner : He asks: Is it permissible to burn torn pages from the Qur'an, or pages containing the name of Allah the Exalted? I believe they contain the name of Allah the Exalted, because I heard that whoever burns a page will be branded with it on the Day of Resurrection. I ask Allah for success and ask you for an answer?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. Burning pages of the mushaf is permissible if they are no longer of use, and there is no blame in doing so.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : When 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) unified the mushafs on the language of the Quraysh, he ordered the burning of all others, and they were burned, and no disagreement from the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) was known regarding this. Likewise, there is nothing wrong with burning pages containing the name of Allah. However, based on the actual situation with printed mushafs, if they are burned, the color of the letters remains visible on the paper after the burning. Therefore, after burning them, one of two things must be done: either they must be buried, or they must be ground until they become ash, so that the letters do not remain and the wind does not carry them away to be trampled by feet.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : As for what he heard, that whoever burns a page will be branded with it on the Day of Resurrection, there is no basis for this.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : This is a message from the sender M M D from Riyadh.
