Burning Torn Qur'ans or Those Containing Errors

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 176 ):
Q: Is it permissible to burn torn Qur'ans or those containing errors and then bury them?
A: If the pages of a Qur'an become worn out and torn due to frequent reading, for example, or become unfit for use, or if errors are found in them due to the negligence of those who wrote or printed them, and they cannot be repaired, it is permissible to bury them without burning, and it is permissible to burn them and then bury them in a place far from filth and foot traffic; to protect them from desecration, and to preserve the Qur'an from
confusion, distortion, or disagreement arising from the spread of Qur'ans that have acquired errors in their writing or printing. It is established in the chapter on the compilation of the Qur'an in [Sahih al-Bukhari] that Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered four of the best readers among the Companions to copy Qur'ans from the Qur'an that had been compiled by the order of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them). When they finished, Uthman sent a copy of what they had transcribed to every region, and ordered that all other Qur'anic material in every sheet and manuscript be burned. No one among the Companions objected to this, except for what is narrated from Ibn Mas'ud , but he only objected to the people restricting themselves to the Qur'an that Uthman sent to the regions, and he did not object to the burning. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
