The questioner : I am asking about the ruling on bringing in what is called al-Tuqaqat to wedding celebrations? And if the wife is forced to accept this, what is required of her?

The Shaykh : Al-Tuqaqat means those who beat the hand drum or the drum or something similar. As for those who beat the hand drum, there is no blame on them on the wedding night; rather, this is among the matters that are prescribed, provided it is free from what is prohibited.
As for those who beat the drum or something similar, it is not permissible to attend them, because the Sunnah was only reported regarding beating the hand drum. The hand drum is the one with one face, and the drum is the one with two faces. It is also necessary to look at the songs these al-Tuqaqat sing. If they are decent, innocent songs, far from the songs of the wicked, there is nothing wrong with it. But if they are bad, foul, and low songs, it is not permissible to attend them, except if the woman’s presence is the cause of preventing these things, by being a woman whose word is accepted, either due to authority or due to religious leadership. In that case, she attends to remove the evil. But if she is unable to remove the evil, then her attendance is forbidden. The result is that attending these al-Tuqaqat is forbidden in the following cases: First: if they are beating the drum or something similar.
Second: if the song they are singing is low, foul, and bad, it is not permissible.
Third: if there is free mixing of men and women, it is also not permissible.
Fourth: if the women are coming in clothes that are exposed, which is forbidden to wear, it is not permissible, except if the woman’s presence is the cause of preventing this forbidden thing, then she must attend so that this forbidden thing is removed. And if the woman does not know, and is invited to this wedding and does not know what is happening, let her accept if she wishes. Then, if she sees an evil and is able to change it, she changes it. And if she is not able to change it, it is obligatory for her to stand up and return to her house.

The questioner : May Allah reward you and bless you. The questioner is Aisha from the Arab Republic of Egypt, Port Said, she says.
