The Book of Hajj-10b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Yahya ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from Hisham ibn 'Urwah, from his father, from 'A'ishah. He said: I said to her: I think that if a man did not perform tawaf between al-Safa and al-Marwah, it would not harm him. She said: Why? I said: Because Allah the Exalted says: "Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah" to the end of the verse. So she said: Allah has not completed the Hajj or 'Umrah of any person who did not perform tawaf between al-Safa and al-Marwah. And if it were as you say, it would be: "There is no blame on him if he does not perform tawaf between them." Do you know what that was about?

The Shaykh : Regarding "in what was that," it is an error in terms of the script, and it is with you all... it should have been "in what was that?" meaning in what matter was that? So it is an interrogative "ma" that no one pointed out, may Allah have mercy on 'Abdullah.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : He became aware of it. The important thing is that the rule in such cases is to drop the alif, because when the preposition enters the interrogative "ma," its alif is dropped.
Do you know what that was about? It was that the Ansar used to declare their intention (ihram) in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance for two idols on the shore of the sea, called Isaf and Na'ilah. Then they would come and perform tawaf between al-Safa and al-Marwah, then shave their heads. When Islam came, they disliked performing tawaf between them because of what they used to do in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. She said: So Allah the Mighty and Majestic revealed: "Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah" to the end of it. She said: So they performed tawaf..

The Shaykh : In his saying:
on the shore of the sea
there is a problem, because it is known that Isaf and Na'ilah were two idols on al-Safa and al-Marwah, and this is what made them hesitate about performing tawaf with al-Safa and al-Marwah, because performing tawaf with them resembles performing tawaf between the idols, so they disliked that. Then Allah the Exalted said:
there is no blame upon him for walking between them
[Al-Baqarah 2:158]
And if it had been in the original text that performing tawaf with them was for the sake of the idols, and also in his saying:
among the symbols of Allah
[Al-Baqarah 2:158]
is evidence that performing tawaf with them is a great matter, because "symbols" (shu'a'ir) is the plural of "symbol" (shu'rah), which is the apparent sign in the religion of Islam. And in this hadith is evidence of 'A'ishah's intelligence and her understanding of Islamic jurisprudence (may Allah be pleased with her), because if the meaning had been that a person has no blame if he leaves off the tawaf, it would have been "there is no blame on him if he does not perform tawaf with them," meaning that if he left off the tawaf with them, there would be no blame on him. But here, the blame is lifted from performing the tawaf, so this is to remove what was in their hearts of hesitation regarding performing tawaf with them.
